Quick Answer

A letter from the Department of Revenue is a different problem from an SR-22 — different agency, different penalty, different clock. Call (629) 312-5200 or request a quote.

Tennessee runs two separate enforcement tracks, and most drivers only find out when they are already in both. The Department of Safety and Homeland Security handles your driver license — that is where SR-22 filings, suspensions, and reinstatements live. The Department of Revenue handles your vehicle registration, and it runs an electronic system that checks whether the cars titled in Tennessee carry liability coverage. If you got a letter about insurance and it did not come from Driver Services, this is why.

The program is called Drive Insured TN, and it exists because of the James Lee Atwood Jr. Law. Since 2017 a web-based system has verified insurance for Tennessee vehicles. When it cannot match your vehicle to an active liability policy, Revenue mails a notice with a PIN on it.

The deadlines are short and they are published. You have 30 days from the date on the first notice to verify coverage or show another accepted form of financial responsibility. Miss that and the department fines you $25. If you also miss the 30-day window on the final notice, the fine is $100 and your vehicle registration is suspended — which means the car cannot legally be driven on Tennessee roads, whatever the status of your license.

You respond online rather than in person. The Tennessee Insurance Verification application takes your license plate number and the PIN printed on the letter, and walks you through a questionnaire. The same tool will tell you your current status if you enter your plate and VIN, which is worth doing before you assume nothing is wrong. One thing to check first: make sure the VIN on your policy is actually correct. A mistyped VIN is a common reason a genuinely insured car gets flagged.

Liability insurance is the ordinary way to satisfy the requirement, at the same 25/50/25 limits Tennessee uses everywhere else — $25,000 for injury or death per person, $50,000 for total injuries per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. The department also accepts a $65,000 bond posted with Revenue or a $65,000 cash deposit, though in practice almost nobody chooses those. If your vehicle carries a commercial plate, it has to be covered by a commercial auto policy, not a personal one.

Where this overlaps with SR-22: a lapse that triggers a Revenue notice is very often the same lapse that puts a Safety-side filing requirement on your license. Clearing one does not clear the other. If you are dealing with both, the fastest path is a single policy that meets the Tennessee minimums and carries the SR-22 filing, so the registration side verifies and the license side gets its certificate from the same bind.

What Is SR-22 Insurance in Tennessee?

An SR-22 is not an insurance policy. It is a certificate of financial responsibility that your insurance company files electronically with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security to prove you carry at least the state’s minimum liability coverage. Tennessee requires this filing from drivers whose licenses were suspended or revoked for certain violations.

Here is what Tennessee specifically requires:

  • Who files itThe policy must be filed electronically with the department by an insurance company licensed through the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance to issue motor vehicle liability coverage in Tennessee. You cannot file it yourself.
  • How long you need itTennessee requires the SR-22 to be maintained for the length of your suspension or revocation period. A one-year revocation means a one-year SR-22 requirement — Tennessee does not apply a flat three-year rule the way many other states do.
  • When it startsThe SR-22 can be maintained while you hold a restricted license, or beginning at reinstatement.
  • What happens if it lapsesIf the policy is canceled or terminated before the requirement is complete, your driving privileges can be suspended again for Failure to Maintain Future Proof of Financial Responsibility. You would then have to refile the SR-22, pay reinstatement fees again, and reapply.
  • How to check whether you still need oneOpen your reinstatement requirements in the Department of Safety e-Services portal. If SR22 is not listed among your requirements, you are no longer required to carry it.

Minimum coverage required: Tennessee’s minimum liability limits are 25/50/25 — $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 property damage per accident (T.C.A. Sec. 55-12-102).
